What is CertiPUR Certification?


CertiPUR-US is a foam certification program administered by a US-based nonprofit organization established in 2008. The aim was to improve the mattress standards and spread the knowledge about which foams are appropriate. CertiPUR-US’s goal is to eliminate the existence of substandard foams imported from foreign nations as they are manufactured using harmful chemicals.


Since then, CertiPUR-US has elucidated how to shop for mattresses, mattress toppers, pillows, and upholstered furniture made of conventional or viscoelastic flexible polyurethane foam for extra cushioning. 


Features of CertiPUR Certified Foams

  • No Use of Ozone Depleting Substances

    The ozone layer protects us from the harmful rays of the sun. When chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs atoms come in contact with ozone in the stratosphere, they deplete the ozone layer by destroying its molecules. Non-CertiPUR-compliant foams are made with CFC which is destroying the natural layer. 

  • No Use of Tris Flame Retardants

    CertiPUR-certified foams are made without PBDEs or polybrominated diphenyl ethers as they are banned in the US by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005. These chemicals have shown effects on the thyroid gland and brain development in offspring.

  • No Use of Mercury, Lead, or Other Heavy Metals

    •

    Although mercury and lead aren’t very common in the foam-manufacturing process, however, there are some traces of their usage in a certain category of mattresses. CertiPUR-US verifies that registered foams are made without mercury, lead, or other heavy metals.

  • No Use of Formaldehyde

    •

    Formaldehyde is a cause of depreciated indoor air quality. CertiPUR-certified foams are free from formaldehyde and are eco-friendly. 

  • No Use of Phthalates

    •

    Phthalates are added in foam manufacturing for making them soft and cushiony. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act 2009 has banned its use in children’s toys and childcare items. All the CertiPUR-certified foams undergo strict laboratory analysis to stay in accordance with the regulations set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

  • Low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Emission

    •

    Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs are released from household products and cause air pollution. CertiPUR-US certified foams undergo a test standardized by the International organization for Standardization. 


    As per the test, foam samples are to be observed for organic compound emission for 72 hours. Results verify that certiPUR certified foams release less than 0.5 parts per million organic compounds, making them eco-friendly.
